Containerised Reverse Osmosis Desalination System

Case Study 2011

Containerised Reverse Osmosis Desalination System

Oil & Water Supplies (Gibraltar) Limited under the instruction of AquaGib Ltd, create a bespoke design, , manufactured, installed and now operate and maintain a containerised 1500 m³/day Seawater Desalination System to provide high quality drinking water to residential, hotel and apartment complexes in Gibraltar.

Capacity 1500 m³/day

The system supplies approximately 33% of the rocks consumption and has been installed since 2011.

Although initially contracted as a system design and build with installation and commissioning project, OWS (Gib) Limited was, at short notice, able to offer operational and maintenance manpower for several years.

The system comprises of the following processes;

  • Seawater lift pumps
  • Backwashing 200-micron strainers
  • Media Filtration with backwash system
  • Dosing systems for biocide dosing, antiscalant dosing, post mineralisation and sterilisation
  • Water storage tanks
  • Grundfos BMEX-ERI Energy Recovery System
  • RO membrane array consisting of 20 RO pressure vessels and 120 RO Membranes
  • Fully integrated Chemical CIP System
  • Final water storage tank and network distribution feed pumps

Providing 1500 m³/day, the system utilises less than 3 kw/hr per m³ of permeate water produced.

The new desalination site has a system recovery of 40%

At 3KW per cubic metre of water produced, the new system is a huge 50% more energy efficient than any previous systems in Gibraltar operating at the time of installation.
